Town of Sarlat

Rooftops of Sarlat
The medieval town of Sarlat is in a region known in France as the Périgord Noir (the Black Perigord). Because modern history largely passed it by, Sarlat has remained beautifully preserved and one of the towns most representative of 14th century France. The center of the old town consists of impeccably restored stone buildings and is largely car-free.
THE CAVES

Lascaux is the setting of a complex of caves in southwestern France famous for its prehistoric cave paintings. The original caves are located near the village of Montignac, in the Dordogne Valley. They contain some of the most well-known (Upper Paleolithic) art, dating back to somewhere between 15,000 and 13,000 BCE. The cave was discovered on 12 September 1940. By 1955, the carbon dioxide produced by 1,200 visitors per day had visibly damaged the paintings. The cave was closed to the public in 1963 in order to preserve the art.
Lascaux II, a replica of two of the cave halls - the Great Hall of the Bulls and the Painted Gallery - was opened in 1983.
